Objective To understand the characteristics of college students' self-disclosure on social networking sites (SNSs) and their relationship with loneliness. Methods A total of 409 college students completed SNSs intensity scale, JSDQ and UCLA Loneliness Scale. Results On SNSs, (1) the scores of boys' self-disclosure on topics of study, attitudes, personality and money and their self-disclosure to all target people except the best same-sex friends who had been known in the real life were higher than girls'. (2) The scores of junior students' self-disclosure on different topics and to different friends were higher than senior students'. (3) Students who spent more time on SNSs and had a stronger emotional connection with SNSs showed more self-disclosure. (4) The scores of college students' self-disclosure on the topic of money ( t = 3. 621, P 〈 0.01 ) and their self-disclosure to strange friends ( t = 2. 961, P 〈 0.01 ) on SNSs could Ix^itively predict loneliness. Conclusions There are significant differences among genders, grades and SNSs intensities on different topics of self-disclosure and to different target people; the scores of self-disclosure on the topic of money and to strange friends on SNSs can positively predict loneliness.
