Many interpretations of the heroines in George Eliot's major novels from the perspective of feminist narrative agree that the majority of women share a similar fate pattern. However, in this similarity there exist very subtle differences: those who con- form to the traditional womanhood ideals end in seemingly happy marriage, and those who divert away from the Victorian values die miserably without exception. George Eliot clearly has employed traditional "harlot and angel" paradigm of English literature, and the employment is far from rigid repetition of the old one. She displays her satire and rebellion to traditional womanhood ideals while showing her respect to the traditional paradigm.
