The dvelopment of knitted, three dimensional, flame resistant spacer fabrics for use in protective garments worn next to the body for a range of end uses is examined. This involved the use of flame retardant materials, some in completely new structures and constructions, which are suitable for textiles worn next to the body. The 3 D construction of the textile means that an insulating layer of air is formed between the two outer surfaces of the textile, which protects the wearer from the effects of heat, while at the same time guarantees that the garment is both breathable and comfortable.
