The university library＇s social service in America developed maturely and has made definite achievements. There are some typical characters as follows： perfect library laws for guarantee, extensive service objects, flexible and multiple service patterns. These charac- ters have beneficial enlightenments for our libraries, mainly including we should set advanced social service ideas, establish perfect library law and library alliance, prompt university library＇s multilayer social service, and deal with the relations between economic benefits and social benefits well.
