自西徂东:复生于东方新生态——华西协合大学的创轫及其立校特色

Transplanting to the East——The Establishment of West China Union University and Its Education Features

20世纪初,由基督教在华创办及管理的私立院校纷纷成立,创办者以西方大学为蓝本,创造出"根在外国,权在教会,西人为主,外国方式"的高等学府。从华西协合大学的创立过程及创校背景和立校特色,可以看出基督教大学得以在中国生根移植的原因在于其普世价值;在中国近代启蒙和社会转型过程中,它们承担了开拓者和示范的角色,其学术、学科、学人、学子不仅利在当时,且惠泽后世。

The early 20th century China had witnessed the establishment of a number of private colleges by the Christian groups from the west. These higher institutions were modeled on western universities, ＂rooted in western tradition, governed by the Church, employing western scholars and teaching in foreign styles＂. Taking West China Union University as a case for study, this paper reveals that the successful transplant of Christian schools to China owed much to the universal values they cherished. In the time of Chinese enlighten- ment and social transformation, these institutions were acting as pioneers in various aspects of higher educa- tion, benefiting China in both short and long terms.
