As one of the three masters surnamed by Tang, Tang Yuan has served successively as Confucian assessor in Suzhou, educational instructor in Fenshui, Nanxuan College dean in Nanjing and so on. Later, he retired from the position of Confucian instructor in Huizhou and was praised as "Tutor of All Scholars in Southeast China". His Neo-Confucian masterpieces such as General Concept on Changes and Record on All One Saw and Heard have already been lost. But through tracing back the scattered sources, the purport and the framework could be acquired. The current existing poetry collection entitled Bamboo Chamber with altogether thirteen volumes has demonstrated his soothing and elegant style of writing as well as his rhetoric and gentle poetic style, which was already appreciated at that time by Yu Ji and Fang Hui. With Tang Yuan included as a member, a group of Xin'an Neo-Confucians in the Yuan Dynasty and those men of letters have inherited and developed Neo-Confucianism, and laid the foundation for the prosperity of Huizhou academy and literature in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
