On Zhao Yi's Remarks of the Rival Principalities in the Tang and Five Dynasties

藩镇割据是唐五代时期重要的社会问题。清代史家赵翼在其《廿二史札记》中多次谈到唐五代藩镇问题,对藩镇兴起与演变,藩镇割据原因,藩镇骄兵,藩镇暴政以及历代控制藩镇的对策等方面进行考证、归纳和评述,这些评论对研究唐五代史有着重要的借鉴意义。

The situation of rival principalities from the late Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties period was a very important social problem. As a famous historian in the Qing Dynasty, Zhao Yi referred to it repeatedly in his book The Reading Notes on the Twenty-two Histories. He deeply researched, summarized, analyzed and commented about it from several aspects, such as its origin, evolution, the reasons of the separatism, tyrannies and harm, and the policies in successive dynasties to tackle the problem. These reviews give important references to the study of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties.
