荀子故里考辨

The Textual Research of Xunzi’s Hometown

荀子故里应是战国时期的赵国,并在很大程度上应是赵国的都城邯郸。荀子的祖上可能是春秋时期晋国的卿族荀氏,但荀氏封地于战国时期并不属赵,因而指今山西南部的临猗、新绛或安泽几个地方为荀子生地都是没有根据的。不能因为《史记》仅仅记载荀子为"赵人"而未给出其生地在某个具体的县邑,便对荀子故里做出一些不切实际的猜测。

The hometown ofXun Zi （a famous thinker in the Warring Period）, should be located in the Zhao State in the Warring Period, and should be in the Handan city which was the capital of Zhao State. The ancestor of Xun Zi may be considered as the Xun Shi who belonged to the Qing nationality of Jin State in Spring and Autumn Period. However, in the Warring State, the fief of Xun Shi didn＇t belong to the Zhao State, so it has no ground to say that the birth places of Xun Zi are Linyi, XinJiang, and Anze and so on in the south of Shanxi Province. So we shouldn＇t make some impractical guess about Xun Zi＇s hometown just because in the Historical Records there is a saying that Xun Zi was a person of Zhao State, but there was no description about the hometown of Xunzi.
