宋人程颐早已指出荆公思想发展演变的阶段性,研究荆公思想不可不分先后地强行糅合。历史地考察荆公思想的发展演变,熙宁变法期间,荆公思想各方面皆发生重大变化:天道观从徘徊于自然天道观与天人感应论之间发展为自然天道观;人性论从性善说、性善恶混说与性不可善恶言说间之游移不定发展为性善恶混说;政治思想中由皇权至上论发展出"君无为而臣有为"的观点。
