摘要
Over the past few years, the U.S.has accelerated its global strategic shift to the Asia-Pacific region even while Afghanistan and Iraq have not yet been settled. The U.S. is worried about its hegemonic aspirations and that its strategic relationships with its Asian allies might be eroded if it does not boost its presence in the Asia-Pacific.
After the Cold War, the U.S. was left as the world' s sole superpower. "There has been no country like the U.S. in history that has possessedsuch a prominent and dominant position." The U.S.' most pressing concern is the loss of its hegemony from challenges posed by the rise of other countries. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the U.S. saw China as the only power to challenge its superpower status over the next few decades. 2 The U.S. believes that it is essential to prevent the rise of China to a point where it becomes an equal opponent so that Washington can hold on to itssole-superpower status and its hegemony in the 21st Century. And so its strategic focus has shifted from Europe to the Asia-Pacific region. The idea of a U.S. strategic shift to the east after the Cold War was suggested many times, but each time it has been delayed.
