Based on the Yuelu Academy, American professor Daniel McMahon investigates the development of Yuelu academy and Hunan＇s turning toward statecraft in nineteenth-century. He describes many Hunan elites＂ histories, and depicts their pedagogical views and values. The academy has interactive rela- tionship with these people. The author makes use of a great many historical references, studies the Yuelu Academy and thinkers in a specific local areas and social environments, and intends the traditional history of ideas into local social cultural history.
