发生在世纪末年的所谓“广场文化热”现象，其实真正热起来的还只是“广场文艺”。广场文艺是一种在开阔的露天场地进行的，以诗、乐、舞为中心的综合性表演艺术，它以其表演性、综合性、群体性、大众性、娱乐性、文化性为基本特质。广场文艺有一个比较复杂的理论体系，具体说，包涵表演层、效果层、背景层三大板块。
