科尔姆的《大师》运用"真实与虚构"相结合的手法,走进了亨利·詹姆斯的内心世界,通过描写"亨利的过去",借用"亨利的写作"等素材,探触亨利灵魂深处的秘密;揣摩他的思绪、触摸他压抑的情感、描绘他汲取写作素材并进行创作构思的实况。《大师》的叙事沉着克制、从容内敛,生动传神地诠释出亨利细腻微妙的内心世界,将亨利内心难以平衡疏离与亲近的苦痛、情感上的迷茫、近乎残酷的理想追求,表述的自然而又真实,细腻中包含着深沉和犹豫。《大师》回避了亨利那些耀眼的成就、闪烁的光环,引导读者靠近的是那个孤独、凄楚、落魄,还有些绝望的亨利。

The great writer Colm, in his novel The Master, made a combination of the ＂real and fictional＂ means of artistic expression and went into the inner world of Henry James to explore secrets in his deep soul by the means of describing ＂Henry＇s past＂ and borrowing some materials of ＂Henry＇s writing＂. Colm also tried to figure out Henry＇s thoughts, touched his repressed emotions and depicted how he did creation and construction of his books from writing materials. The narrative style of The Master is calm, restrained, unhurried and reserved, and lively and vividly interprets Henry＇s delicate and subtle inner world. Colm expressed naturally and truly the pain of Henry, which is difficult to maintain the alienation and closeness balance, the emotional confusion and the cruel pursuit of the ideal. The style of this novel is of minute expression, which contains depth and hesitation. In The Master, Colm avoided describing Henry＇s dazzling achievement and shining glory, but guided the reader closer to that lonely, miserable, spiritless and even some desperate Henry.
