（October 9, 1912 July 30, 2010） October 9 of tills year is the 100th anniversary of Professor Wei-zang CHIEN, who was the founder of our journal Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. Professor CHIEN has bceu one of the most outstanding and world renowned scientists ill applied mathematics and mechanics. Tile intrinsic theory about elastic plates and shells es- tablished by Professor CHIEN in the 1940s unified various theories of plates and shells and pioneered the new field of rational mechanics. His research on tile singular perturbation the- ory and the large deflection problem of elastic thin circular plates studied in the 1940s and 1950s and the research about tile generalized variational principle studied in the 1960s are all groumtbreaking work in the world.
