'Pay attention to the rhythm! 1-2-3 begin!' Moving in time with the music, the dancers at the Shanghai Grand Theater were practicing again for the umpteenth time that day.Slowly but surely, the performers were getting used to the music, just like they were getting used to their new roles - cats. This is the rehearsal for the Chinese version of Cats.During the second half of this year, this incredibly successful musical, the second longest-running show in Broadway history, and the fourth longest-running West End musi- cal, made its Chinese language appearance at the Shanghai Grand Theater. However, the production has not been without its problems;first-tier city advertising costs was high and so far the audience response has been lukewarm. 'If someone were to tell me that the time of musicals has come, and the dream of a Chinese Broadway had arrived, I would tell that person they were talking nonsense,' says Yingzi,'China's Queen of Musicals' and the lead role of Donna Sheridan in the Chinese version of Mamma Mia.
