Objective To compare the effectiveness of ulcer healing between negative pressure dressing and conventional moist dressing in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Methods The clinical data of 35 patients with diabetic foot ulcers( Wagner grade 3 - 5 ) from May 2008 to May 2010 were respec-tively analyzed. Twenty patients ( study group) received negative pressure dressing while other 15 patients ( control group)received conventional dressing. Results were compared for wound healing time and amputa-tion rate. Results The average wound healing time in the study group was( 28.21 ± 4.34)d while the av-erage time in the control group was(57.35 ± 5.23 )d. In the control group, 18 patients(90% )had to re-ceive amputation and only 2 patients( 10% )treated with standard dressings had successful limb salvage. In the study group, only 5 patients (33.33%)underwent amputation and 10 patients (66.67%)had a func-tional affected limb. Conclusion The negative pressure dressing technique, debridement and appropriate antibiotic therapy enable a lower rate of amputation effectively.
