As Dr. Hsiang-Tung Chang approached his late 80s, he began the task of sorting and compiling all of his scien- tific writings into volumes. He later acknowledged that he was initially ambivalent about the idea when col- leagues first suggested it to him, but quickly came to believe that the effort should be seen as beyond his own personal interest and significance, and that the ar- chives would be of good value from both the scientific and historical perspectives. On the opening page of the completed volumes, Chang devoted the entire space to a single-sentence quote - printed in bolded large font in English as well as in Chinese translation - by British physiologist Emest H. Starling about the neurophysiol- ogist Keith Lucas: "His whole life was in his work and so the work reveals the man".
