Cognitive Study of the English Vocabulary Based on the Category Theory

范畴理论是认知语言学的核心理论之一,对英语词汇的认知研究有重要指导意义。基于范畴理论,主要探讨英语基本范畴词汇的构词和语义原型效应并讨论上、下位范畴词汇的演绎、归纳作用以及它们的语篇功能。文章认为,范畴理论观照下的基本范畴词汇是扩大词汇量的有效途径,具有构词和语义原型效应。范畴理论对一词多义有较强的解释力,同时,对上下位范畴词汇的语篇功能提供了重要的理论依据。

Category theory, one of the core theories of the cognitive linguistics, is of great importance to the cognitive study of the English vocabulary. This paper, from the perspective of the category theory, mainly probes into the prototype effects of the basic category words in their word formation and their polysemy. It also explores the deductive, inductive as well as the textual function of the superordinate and subordinate category words. The paper holds that basic category words have prototype effects in beth word formation and explanation of polysemy category theory is explanatorily powerful to polysemic words and offers theoretical base for the textual function of the superordinate and subordinae category words.
