摘要
Charles C.Fries是美国结构主义语言学派代表人物之一,但与同时期其他结构语言学家不同的是,他的语言学理论含有功能学派的部分理论元素,这一点他的后人未有提及。本文拟对Fries的语言系统观、语言学观、语义观和语境观进行概括和梳理,分析Fries的语言理论中所体现的功能元素,旨在探讨Fries对功能语言学的部分贡献并帮助人们进一步理解Fries与同时期其他结构主义语言学家的显著不同。
Charles C. Fries is a representative figure of American structural linguistics, yet he is different from the other contemporary structuralists in that his linguistic theory embraces certain functional elements, which have not been explored by his followers. This paper attempts to analyze Fries＇ conceptions of language, linguistics, meaning as well as context and to discuss the functional elements related to those conceptions in order to explore Fries＇ contribution to functional linguistics and to help people further understand how he distinguishes himself from his contemporaries.
