Hosted by the China Maritime Law Association, the 40th Conference of the Comite Maritime International (CMI) concluded on Oct.19 in Beijing and an add-on was arranged in Shanghai on Oct.20-22. Hua Jianmin, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) delivers keynote speech at the 40th Conference. Wan Jifei, Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Capt. Wei Jiafu, President of China Maritime Law Association and Karl-Johan Gombrii, President of CMI addresses the opening ceremony separately. Capt. Wei said that it is of great significance for the CMI to choose the conference venue in China. It will help the Chinese maritime law world to understand the latest trend and hotspot issues of international maritime legislation and help the international maritime law circle to understand the development and maritime trial, maritime arbitration and adjustment of the practice of China's maritime law, which is helpful to maritime law circle all over the world and will deepen the understanding and promote friendship, further improve maritime legal system and promote the unification of world maritime legal system. Distinguished participants from the world focused on contemporary and important issue of maritime law, including the Judicial Sale of Ships, Salvage, Arrest of Ships, Cross Border Insolvencies, Arctic and Antarctic Legal Issues, Regulation of the Offshore Industry, the Rotterdam Rules, Arbitration in Asia, Marine Insurance and Fair Treatment of Seafarers. The Conference decided to what extend legislative texts should be adopted in relation to the Judicial Sale of Ships and Salvage. The CMI holds a conference every three-to-four years to discuss international maritime issues. It is the first time to be held in China since the CMI was founded in 1897.
