Both corpus linguisties and cognitive linguistics hold the view that lexis and grammar are inseparable. Usage patterns of a collocation are related to its meaning. Sinclair and other researchers discussed semantic preference and semantic prosody of collocation through a deep analysis of short distance contexts of collocations. This paper, based on corpus evidence, looks into syntactic patterns of collocations. The investigation shows the use of collocation has syntactic preference and this preference is part of meanings of collocation. This from-corpus-to-cognition approach is an important approach to usage-based lexicogrammatical studies.
