Locke' s philosophy constitutes the philosophical background of the 18th British realistic literature. This article argues that interpreting Robinson Crusoe from the perspective of Lockean philosophy, the novel describes the construction of self as well as the destruction of authority. Crusoe disobeys his father and leaves home for the sea, which echos strongly Locke' s idea of patriarch and self-decision. The novel alternates between Crusoe's sensual experience and inter- nal contemplation, which are the key words of Lockean epistemology, and through his dual expe- riences, Crusoe achieves his construction of the self.
