The Tunnel, written by American postmodern writer William Gass, is a controversial metafiction. As a language philosopher, Gass emphasizes words and signs so much that, with experimental artistic techniques, Gass shows to readers a bedazzling world of words. The Tunnel tends to explore the ontological difference of plot and indulgence of languag reality. It also deals with the novel, language in various contexts, focusing on the lack of e in the novel, showing the fancy world of words and mazy fictional purposed disorder and bedazzling non-linear narrative style of the emphasis on poetic language, metaphorical symbols and parody, etc. Thus, The Tun- nel fully illustrates Gass' s aesthetic focus on the role of artists as "methodologists" to pursue the value of the novel itself, the disregard of its social and moral significance and expectation of ideal readers.
