Intellectuals have been accused of failing to restore a European confidence undermined by crisis.Yet calls for legitimating European narratives—combined with nostalgia for a golden age of Europeanism—remain faithful to the logic of nineteenth-century nation building,argues this author.What,then,should Europe’s intellectuals be doing？They should stay well clear of the vision business and the manufacture of quasi-national master narratives;as clarifiers,they are expected to explain Europe to their audiences.Meanwhile,they may act as sophisticated cultural translators and political mediators for clarification and public justification.Intellectuals ought to defend liberty and democracy in the face of Eurozone crisis.
