The concept of a “negative background” is introduced and used to analyze the emergence and development of Chinese new literature. In the author's opinion, Chinese new literature had a rather complex cultural and literary background, and negative as well as positive elements played a role in its inception and development. These negative elements, while being a hindrance, also expedited the birth and promoted the development of new literature. The oppressive, rigid atmosphere in ideological and cultural circles aroused the zeal of the pioneers of the May Fourth Movement for literary revolution, and a reduction in the number of works in classic Chinese and infantile writings in the vernacular language helped to bring forth great quantities of new literary works.
