n October 26, 2012, after three readings I by the National People＇s Congress, China＇s top legislature, the law finally passed. It skates thin menttal health examinations mad ueatrnent must be conducted on a voluntary b,＇tsis, unless a person is considered a danger to himself or others. Only psychiatrists will have the authority to commit people to hospitals lbr uwatment, mad treatment may be compulsory only for patients diagnosed with a severe mental illnesses. Sigfificantly, the law gives people who feel they have been unnecessarily admitted into mental health facilities the right to appeal.
