The function of rare earth elements in steel and its effect on performance of the steel are summarized. The R＆D progress on the rare earth treated steel is discussed and the effect of rare earth elements on the corrosion resistance of the steel is particularly emphasized. Several domestic steel works where the rare earth treated steel is produced are introduced concerning their manufacturing status and applications of the steel and finally some troubles on production of the rare earth treated steel are mentioned and the trend on developing the rare earth treated steel is proposed.
