The characterization and functions of Dalila in Samson Agonistes are very complex. More than the direct cause of Samson' s Fall as she originally was, Dalila in the tragedy is characterized by Milton, in the paradoxical sense, as Samson' s Mirror Image and the impetus of Samson' s regeneration. It is in the very process of his resisting Dalila' s various temptations that Samson realizes the essence of his fall, restores his faith, exalts himself from merely a physical giant to the Christian spir- itual agonists, and finally fulfills his mission entrusted by God.
