The American novelist John Cheever creates in The Swimmer a unique river, which symbolizes the habitat of the A- merican middle class, named Lucinda through his extraordinary imaginative power and skillful narrative techniques. The pro- tagonist Neddy Merrill' s going home through this river symbolizes the life voyage of the middle class. Neddy' s watery voyage homeward is in effect a kind of quest for the American dream and his quest symbolizes similarly the perdition of such a dream.
