An Analysis of International Function in The Secret Garden

人际功能是系统功能语言学的三大元功能之一,这一理论的运用在文学中的研究地位也越来越显著。本文以《秘密花园》中玛丽和玛莎的对话为例,在功能语法人际功能理论框架下,通过对语气和情态两方面的分析,分析小说文本中玛丽和玛莎两个人物的性格特征和人际关系,以此来表明功能语言学可以为儿童文学作品的欣赏和评价提供新的视角。

Interpersonal function is one of the three important functions of systematic function and it shows great effect on literature.This paper analyzes the conversation between Mary and Martha in Chapter four.Guided by the systematic function,it analyzes the mood system and modality system.The result demonstrates that Holliday＇s interpersonal function can function as a useful tool in revealing the characteristic and the relationship between characters.The study also shows that the interpersonal analysis effectively sheds fresh insight into the literary significance of the literary work.
