An A-list cast bel canto singers,led by vocally luxurious and dramatically spirited Anna Netrebko,opened the 2012-13 Metropolitan Opera season with Donizetti's ever-popular L'Elisir d'Amore.It could have been a very enjoyable night. Unfortunately the fun was let out by director Bartlett Sher's interpretation.He deliberately imposed a revolutionary undertone to add gravitas to the romantic comedy.yet the interpretation was superfieial and inconsistent,sabotaging characters and their relations.Sher's fourth production at the Metropolitan Opera is another disappointment and cast serious doubt on his understanding of opera.
