Travel Space Theory in New Story of the Stone

《新石头记》作为晚清的一部重要小说,其中包括了大量的旅行叙事,小说同时使用了晚清最为常见的"乡村—城市"之旅、南北之旅、乌托邦之旅三种旅行模式来描述主人公贾宝玉的行程。不难看出,上述旅行模式之间存在着一种顺次递进的逻辑关联,它们不仅连贯地描述了主人公的游历过程,还动态地表现了旅行者精神世界与思想认识的升华过程。生逢衰世的作者也正是借助小说中的旅行叙事,利用文学这一形式阐释了自身的国族想象。

As an important novel in late Qing Dynasty, New Story of the Stone has lots of stories to tell the journey of the leading character Jia Baoyu. There are three travel modes in this novel：rnral-urban travel, north-south travel and Utopia travel, and they were very common in late Qing Dynasty. It＇ s not difficult to find the progressive logic existing among the above-mentioned travel modes. In this way, not only the journey of the leading character is described co- herently, but also the distillation procedure of the tourist＇ s spiritual world and his thoughts are shown dynamically. With this travel narrative novel, the author, who was born in a recession time, elaborated his own nationality imagina- tion in the form of literature.
