On the Meaning of Fine Arts

从历史的角度对中日两国的美术概念,特别是作为汉字的"美术"一词,在学理上进行深入的探讨。美术学这一学科名在中国能否真正成立,必须对作为汉字的(被欧化的)"美术"概念进行修正。

From a historical point of view, the paper discusses the concept of fine arts in China and Japan, espe cially the Chinese ＂Meishu＂ in theory. Whether the name of the discipline of the science of fine arts can be estab lished depends on the emendation of the concept of Europeanized ＂fine arts＂ as Chinese.
