The past 30 years and especially the first decade of the 21st century have witnessed a remarkable progress in cognitive research on translation process. The progress manifests itself in a growing tendency to apply advanced techniques and data-elicitation methods of cognitive sciences to translation studies. The remarkable findings of a number of large-scale international research projects in this respect have not only facilitated an integration of the two areas but are also pushing for the establishment of a new discipline, i.e., cognitive translation studies. The new discipline is, however, confronted with formidable challenges stemming from its lack of a systematic theoretical model, its insufficiency in methodology-related research, and its inadequate scheme for resource sharing. To ensure a smooth development of cognitive translation studies, attention must be turned to researches on its theoretical modeling, methodology, and resource sharing, and on a further specification of its subjects and variables as well.
