本文以王熙凤在第十六回合中的语言为分析蓝本,比较《红楼梦》两全译本的译者杨宪益和霍克斯处理王熙凤语言中的以四字格为基础的俗语翻译的异同,从文化传递的角度分析两译本的优劣,探讨汉语四字格英译的规律。

This paper intends to compare and contrast the two complete and most well-known English versions of Chinese mas- terpiece ＂The Dream of the Red Chamber＂ in terms of the four-character Chinese expressions based on Wang Xifeng＇s id- ioms in the first sixteen chapters, so as to probe into the rules be- hind English translation of four-character Chinese style expres- sions from the angle of cultural transmission.
