Research on the Evolution of Chinese Traditional "Doorway" Space

本文立足于中国传统建筑理论,借助汉字字形进行符号空间的探讨,从"门"、"户"的字形、字意出发,结合门户空间进行深入分析、比形、比意,基于门户不但有着形字的空间特征,还有精神象征喻意的内涵的思考,进一步对院落、村镇、城市三个层次门户空间进行分析,探讨传统门户如何形成从物质实体到精神象征的升华,最终总结出传统门户是自然精神空间与物质实体营造的合二为一,更是追求天、地、人合一的哲学思想产物。

This article intends to analyze the concept of ＂doorway＂ based on the traditional Chinese architectural theory. Oriented toward Chinese character and symbol space, the methodology starts with a close examination of the very Chinese character of ＂doorway＂ to look into the evolution of the character＇s form and meaning. Then it goes on to explore the connection between the metaphorical connotation and physical presence in architectural context, and has a further analysis on the three levels of architectural ＂doorway＂： courtyard, town, and city. Finally ithas a conclusion that the traditional Chinese ＂doorway＂ is not only the natural fusion of mindful creation and physical construction, but also the philosophical embodiment of people＇s pursuit of the harmony between heaven and human being.
