English intonation has important roles in communication. Different intonation patterns communicative meanings in a particular context and discourse. Traditional pedagogical treatments of English may have different intonation overlook the communicative value of intonation. Learners have problems communicating by using certain intonation patterns. The author emphasizes that English intonation should be taught communicatively and functionally in real-life context and discourse, with the support of information technology and other multi-media facilities and machines.
