The intelligent substation is an extension and change of the development of substation automation technology, In this paper, through the comparison between the intelligent substation and the conventional substation, an analysis on the technical advantages of the intelligent substation in the major aspects such as intelligent primary equipment, network secondary equipment, IEC61850 standard communication network is made with the differences between the intelligent substation and the conventional substation expounded. In addition, the feasibility of the construction of intelligent substations is analyzed and discussed, and an actual example introduced in the paper proves the advantages of the intelligent substation in terms of stability, reliability, economy and other aspects.
