The deformation of initial solidified layer directly affects the surface quality of continuous casting steel. Experiments are conducted to study the effects of the carbon and other alloy element contents on the free deformation of solidified shell by the drop-let method. Results show that the higher the casting temperature is, the more spherical the casting steel sample looks. This is due to the rebend and redissolvation of the bottom shell with the changes of the surface tension and element contents. The effects of silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur contents are relatively much less compared with the effect of carbon content on the deformation of initial solidified layer. Thus carbon is the main element that influences the initial solidified layer.
