From Scripting the Future to Fabricating the Future

This article discusses the theoretical evolution of digital design,through an analysis of its development phases：the pre-digital era,the parametric theoretical era and the multi-agent system era which is based on scripting and algorithmic design combined with form and performance,as well as collaborative design.Moreover,we examine and clarify the distinction between parametric and algorithmic design through their fundamental conceptual and technical aspects.In addition,we explore the field of methodological research of top-downgeometric design and bottom-up emergent design in architecture,and emphasize the important role that the theory of digital fabrication has played to the digital paradigm revolution.Finally,we highlight the prospects of evolution that digital fabrication brings about to the architectural and multi-dimensional material industry.
