Classical Chinese scholar’s gardens represent a distinctive tradition in environmental design that has philosophical origins and significance. More than simply constructions, these gardens embody beliefs about the human place in the natural world and ways of embodying that condition in material form. They represent a tradition that is interesting and important in its own right, but it has special significance as a model of the harmonious relation of built and natural landscapes. Considering the relevance of the classical Chinese garden for contemporary environmental thought, this essay explores some of its underlying beliefs and characteristics, asking whether this distinctive cultural development embodies ways of thinking that can make a contribution to contemporary environmental design. Identifying five characteristics of classical Chinese gardens, it considers whether these traits could guide the design of environments that seek to harmonize human and natural conditions and functions.
