Contrastive Analysis of Interpretations of Newly Added Characters in Leipian (类篇) and Shuowen Jiezi (说文)

《类篇》是一部以"《说文》为本"的字书,它体现了对《说文》的继承和发展,《类篇》所收《说文》新附字与大徐本之间在释义内容上有同有异,异大于同,这种差异又有"小异"和"迥异"之分。通过分析可以看出,大徐本《说文》和《类篇》的释义上既有优点又有缺点,这不仅是由于各自编纂体例的不同而造成的,更深层的原因恐怕是与当时的社会学术思想的发展变化有关系。

Leipian（类篇,also known as Classified Chapters）,as a character dictionary based on Shuowen Jiezi（说文,also known as Annotations on the Chinese Characters）,inherited and further developed the gist of the latter.There existed similarities and differences between the interpretation of the newly added characters absorbed by Leipian（类篇） from Shuowen Jiezi（说文） and the interpretation of the same characters in Xú Xuàn’s version of Shuowen Jiezi（说文）,with differences outweighing similarities.Through careful analysis,it was found that the two had both merits and demerits in interpreting equivalent characters,which not only resulted from differences in their lexicographic compiling styles,but also had deeper relationship with the evolution of social and academic ethos of the time.
