Digital Public Library of America （DPLA） is a joint project by American libraries, archives, museums, and other stakeholders to develop a digital public library providing free access to information for all. This article starts with the rationale for the project and discusses its concepts and prototypes. It is hoped that the introduction of DPLA to China would help inspire the Chinese counterparts to develop sophisticated digital libraries in China.
