Driven by the implementation of HFC broadband access network and DOCSIS Cable Modem, CATV operators are planing to offer subscribers packet based real time voice service via cable network. Related specifications are studied and a compliant system architecture is presented. The emphasis is laid on the functional requirements and implementation issues that must be considered for the Cable Modem based residential gateway.
