High impact authors are the fundamental forces in the scientific production for an institution. Hence research on the distribution of high impact authors among institutions is one of the main ways to evaluate an academic institution. According to subject classification and computing algorithms for authors and institutions in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), relations between authors and institutions in four disciplines have been explored and the result shows that generally 80% high impact authors work in 1% top cited institutions. Furthermore, quantitative analysis on the author distribution among hierarchical institutions indicates that the percentages of high impact authors distributing in three groups of high cited institution are at a stable level. Consequently a new strategy is proposed that the proportion of high impact authors that an institution possesses in a discipline can be applied to institution evaluation
