Training of 3 captive Siberian tigers ( Panthera tigris altaica) at Beijing Zoo from 2005 to 2011 facilitated veterina- ry care. Training programs included moving tigers from cage to cage, body size and weight measurement, standing on hind legs, intramuscular injection, drawing blood from tail, collecting urine, oral and dental examination, and nail clipping. Training re- duced the stress caused by environment change and human disturbance in normal feeding and management. Guided by Beijing Zoo personnel, tigers voluntarily cooperated with certain activities, such as intramuscular injection, blood sampling, oral and dental examination, and nail clipping, all of which were formerly undertaken only on tranquilized tigers. The tiger training pro- grams enabled Zoo personnel to avoid the risks to tigers due to tranquilizing. This kind of behavior training is different from training for performance, and it is an ffective method to improve animal welfare.
