李格尔将知觉心理学引入对艺术史的阐释,形成了一套独特的理论术语,他的艺术史体系正是以这些术语为理论支点搭建起来的。为建构科学的艺术史观,李格尔在研究方法上多有创见,使用对当时艺术史学界来说颇为新颖的术语"艺术意志";采用新的切入视角——知觉心理学;提出艺术史发展的新模式:钟摆模式等。在西方艺术史学史上,李格尔是由古典艺术史学向现代艺术史学转变最为关键的一环。当然,李格尔的理论建构还存有缺陷,但他认真专注和富于挑战精神的学术态度,以及宏观把握与微观考察相结合的研究思路,会不断给我们以启示。

Riegl,as the most important representative of Vienna art history school,was one of the founders of modern western art history.His introduction of psychology of perception into the interpretation of the art history helped form a unique set of theoretical terms which were exactly the basis of his achievements.As the key figure during the transition from classical art history studies to modern art history studies in the West,Riegl started innovations in methodology:he adopted Kunstwollen—a term which was fairly novel at that time and introduced psychology of perception as the breakthrough point for research and proposed pendulum mode—a new model of art history.In spite of the flaws in his theoretical construction,we gain a good deal of enlightenment from his commitment,courage as well as his approach of combining macroscopic with microscopic.
