《莱特战记》较客观地描写了太平洋战争末期菲律宾战场最为惨烈的莱特岛攻防战。大冈升平作为菲律宾战场的幸存者,试图通过在该作品中再现莱特岛战役的真相,为日军战死者安魂。为此,作品聚焦在那些面对美军的猛烈进攻仍负隅顽抗的日军身上,为侵菲日军树碑立传,形成了赞颂"顽强抵抗"的日军的主题。该作品在大冈的"战争五部曲"中起着承前启后的作用,占有重要地位。

The Battle for Leyte Island objectively describes the Leyte War,the most bitter war on the Philippine battlefield in the Pacific War the end of Word War II.As a war survivor,Ooka Shohei tries to recreate the truth in the Leyte War as a requiem for dead Japanese soldiers.The focus is on the Japanese soldiers who put up a last ditch fight against Americans forces.The novel,written to honor Japanese soldiers fighting in the Philippines,aims at praising Japanese soldiers who put up a strong resistance and plays an important role in Ooka Shohei’s War Quintet.
