The importance of developing science and technology （S＆T） was reiterated by Chinese President HU Jintao during the National Conference on S＆T Innovation which was held in Beijing on July 6 and 7, 2012. Hailing S＆T innovation as the key to ＂pushing forward China＇s reform and opening-up policy and building a moderately prosperous society,＂ HU called for increasing the investment in the research and development sector from 1.83 percent of GDP in 2011 to more than 2.5 percent in 2020.
