The economic cooperation between Japan and ASEAN during the Cold War lays the material foundation for their security cooperation during the post-cold war era. In order to be a political and military great power, less dependent on the United States in the field of security and counterbalance rapidly rising China, Japan strengthens the security cooperation with ASEAN after the Cold War. The two sides collaborate deeply in the fields of traditional and non-traditional security. But the Japan-US alliance and ASEAN＇s psychology to guard against Japan are the main constraints of their security cooperation.
